Break, breath

드디어 해내셨군요! 가장 중요하고 때로는 가장 어려운 건 집 밖으로 나가는 거예요. 우리는 당신이 여기 있다는 것이 기뻐요. 이제 한번 눈을 감고 하루 중 가장 깊게 들이마신 호흡을 해보세요. 코를 통해 폐와 배로 깊숙이 공기가 들어가게 해보는 겁니다. 잠시 유지하고 천천히 입으로 숨을 내쉽니다. 긴장을 풀고 지금, 이 순간에 집중하도록 합니다. 지나가는 구름을 상상해보세요. 붙잡지 말고 그냥 관찰하고 사라지게 두세요.

전시 《Break, breath》에서 박채별과 박채달은 호흡, 휴식, 쉼에 대해 고민한다. 이 전시의 설치는 잠시 쉬면서 휴식에 대해 생각해 볼 수 있도록 고안되었다. 휴식은 무엇을 의미할까? 휴식을 취하기 위해 필요한 것은 무엇일까? 그것은 가능한 것일까?

박채별의 〈Series of reading hammocks〉는 관객으로 하여금 해먹 형태의 작업물에 오르고, 그 안에 눕도록 초대하여 전시 공간을 수직에서 수평으로 전환하도록 유도한다. 천으로 감싸진 해먹의 구조는 내부와 외부를 분리하고 보호막을 제공한다. 관객은 흔들리는 구조물 안에서 옥타브 마제스카스의 세 개의 사운드 작품을 듣거나 여러 권의 책을 읽으면서 휴식의 아이디어와 관련된 다양한 감정에 대해 성찰하도록 초대된다. 또한 해먹이 설치된 위치는 전시장과 외부의 도시 공간을 바라보고 관찰할 기회가 되기도 한다.

박채달의 작업 〈Leaves〉 그리고 〈Hand to hand〉는 공간 위에 떠다니는 듯 보인다. 그녀의 그림들이 서로를 붙들고 바닥으로 떨어지지 않도록 하기 때문이다. 〈Hand to hand〉는 작가가 직접 뜨개질을 하여 그것을 늘리고 고정하는 과정을 거친 후 그 위에 그림을 그린 것이다. 작품의 결과가 아니라 그 과정에 집중하도록 하려는 방법의 일환으로서 작가는 뜨개질뿐만 아니라 자연에서 수집한 나뭇잎을 활용한 그림판 제작 실험 등을 하였다. 이러한 작가의 태도는 작품 제작과정이 사색과 휴식의 시간이 되길 바라는 것이기도 하다. Hey, you made it! The most important, and sometimes the hardest part is showing up. We are glad that you are here. Now, close your eyes and take the deepest breath you’ve taken all day.
Breathe in through your nose, let the air stream deeply into your lungs and belly. Hold it for a second and exhale slowly through your mouth. Try to relax and be in this moment. Imagine your thoughts like clouds passing by. Don’t hold them, just observe and let them fade. They come as they go. Focus on your body and the space around you: What do you hear? Is there something you can smell?  With your next inhale, slowly open your eyes again: What do you see? How do you feel?

In their exhibition Break, breath the artists Park Chae Biole and Park Chae Dalle investigate practices of taking a breath, a break, a rest. Like the exercise above which can aid in taking a pause for a moment, their site-specific installations offer spaces for reflection and contemplation: What does or can resting mean? What is required to take a rest? Is rest possible at all?

Park Chae Biole’s Series of reading hammocks invites the audience to climb in, to lie down and to change from a vertical to a horizontal perspective in the exhibition space. The fabric of the hammock can be wrapped around the body, separating inside from outside and providing shelter. Inside the rocking structure, several books and three sound pieces by Octave Magescas, which are as comforting as they are disruptive, invite the visitor to reflect on the ambivalences that are associated with ideas of resting. The position in the hammock also functions as a safe and comfortable viewpoint from which to overlook and observe the exhibition and the urban space of the neighborhood outside.

Park Chae Dalle’s Leaves and Hand to hand seem to float in space. Like bodies in a hammock – which are secured by a rope – the painted canvases are held above the ground by threads, keeping them from falling. The canvases were made in a labor-intensive, experimental and repetitive process of collecting, drying and layering leaves and glue; of knitting woolen shapes, stretching and stabilizing them. This meditative practice of active patience manifests and visualizes not only the passing of time in the presence of the leafy and knitted canvas but also destabilizes notions of rest as something passive.

박채달은 1997년 파리에서 태어나 어린 시절의 일부를 한국에서 보냈다. 2020년 ENSAPC(파리 세르지 국립예술학교)를 졸업한 뒤 2022년 르 아브르 예술학교에서 문예창작 석사 과정을 마쳤다. 그림을 그리고 시를 쓰는 박채달은 시간을 살아내고 느끼게 해주는 느릿한 과정을 만드는 데 관심을 갖는다. 그 과정이란 주변에서 발생하는 작은 일들을 관찰할 수 있도록 해주는 것이기도 하다. 파리에 거주하며 작업하고 있고, Anne-Laure Buffard 갤러리의 소속 작가다.

유럽과 한국을 오가며 활동하는 박채달은 Fondation Fiminco에서 열린 제72회 Jeune Création 페스티벌(2022)에 작품을 선보였고, 자매 박채별과는 함께 서울 OF에서의 《Our Walk》(2021), 파리 Anne-Laure Buffard 갤러리에서의 《Climb and Pause》(2022)로 두 차례 공동 전시를 진행했다. Collectif Nest의 회원이며, 파리의 Maison Fraternelle, Tour Orion, 6B, Galerie du Crous에서 많은 전시와 이벤트를 기획했다.

또한 박채달은 자신의 시집을 손수 만들어오고 있고, 김원우와 협업한 ‘Montagne’는 Édition Mother에서 출판되었다. Mouvement Magazine에 시를 발표했으며, 여러 라디오 방송과 팟캐스트, 낭독회를 통해 시를 직접 들려주기도 한다.

박채별은 파리를 거점으로 다양한 영역에 걸쳐 활동 중인 프랑스 태생의 한국인 작가다. 조각과 회화, 설치 등 다양한 매체를 넘나드는 박채별의 작업은 신체와 그 제약에 대한, 그리고 신체 자체의 움직임과 구성 원리가 이동성을 좌우하는 공간에서 그 제약이 갖는 모호함에 대한 탐구라 할 수 있다. 조각을 현실과 동떨어진 오브제라든가 단순한 기능적 오브제로 바라보는 관점을 넘어, 몸의 움직임에 얽힌 실용적이고 개인적인 물음을 시적이고 공감적인 접근 방식으로 풀어냄으로써 관객을 오브제의 정체성에 관해 재고하도록 이끈다.

2015년 ENSAPC(파리 세르지 국립예술학교)에 입학한 이후로, 박채별은 Marrakech Biennale(2018), 폴란드 The Flow 레지던시(2019), The Mulhouse Biennale Motoco(2021), 프랑크푸르트 Magma Maria Art Center(2022), 트레비소 La Fabrica 레지던시(2022) 등 프랑스 국내외의 여러 레지던시와 단체전에 참여했다. 자매인 박채달과의 공동 전시로는 서울 OF에서 《Our Walk》(2021)를, 프랑스 Anne-Laure Buffard 갤러리에서 《Climb and Pause》(2022)를 진행한 바 있다.

박채별은 현재 Anne-Laure Buffard 갤러리의 소속 작가이며, 파리를 기반으로 하는 Collectif Nest의 회원이다.
